Our Review

The pink-hued neoclassical palace on Tahrir Square has been the premier Egyptological address since Marcel Dourgnon designed it in 1897. Many treasures have migrated to the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza, but hundreds of thousands of objects remain, and the building's slightly antiquated presentation has its own irreplaceable charm. Cabinets from the early 20th century sit beside modern vitrines; labels range from typewritten cards to digital panels.

The ground floor is organized broadly chronologically. Old Kingdom masterpieces include the gorgeous seated diorite statue of Khafre protected by the falcon god Horus, the startlingly lifelike wooden Ka-Aper, and the delicate Meidum Geese fresco. The Amarna gallery holds exquisite works from the revolutionary period of Akhenaten and Nefertiti.

Upstairs, the Royal Mummy Hall provides an eerie encounter with ancient power: the mummified remains of Ramesses II, Seti I, Queen Hatshepsut, and others lie in climate-controlled cases, their features still discernible after three thousand years. The jewelry hall dazzles with golden pectorals, faience beads, and inlaid scarabs from multiple dynasties. The museum's future role is evolving, but it remains essential.
